Here is a list of world events that happened in 2011, the year that you were born!

January 8 – 19 people were shot, including a federal judge, and US Representative Gabby Giffords was shot in the head by Jared Laughner. She survived.

January 25th – Egyption revolution begins.

January 26th – Syrian Uprising

Febuary 3rd – Yemen Uprising

February 15th – Libyan civil war begins

March 11th – Earthquake hits Japan followed by a Tsunami that killed thousands. The world then watched to see what the nuclear reactors would do in Japan, they released enough radiation to be detected in California, and trace amounts in Virginia.

April 25th – Outbreak of tornatoes swept the United States, Record tornadoes in Virginia including Pulaski, Halifax, and Rocky Mount. A tornadoe hit on McNill Mill Road, which runs parallell to Goose Dam Road which is where we live. 353 tornadoes were confirmed in the US, in 21 states.

April 29th – Prince William and Kate Middleton were married at Westminister Abbey. This was the Royal Wedding

May 1st – Osama Bin Laden was captured in Pakistan by US Navy Seals and killed. He was the mastermind behind the September 11th attacks on the United States.

July 5th – Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder for killing her 2 year old daughter, Caylee. She did it but the prosecution did not have enough evidence.

July 21st – Space shuttle Atlantis returns to Earth, ending NASAs final shuttle mission ending a 30 year era.

August 20th – Hurricane Irene hits the east coast of the United States.

September 10th – 9/11 Flight 93 Memorial Ceremony was unvieled in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It was dedicated by President Obama, President George Bush, President Bill Clinton, and First Lady Michelle Obama.

September 11th – The World Trade Center had a 10 year memorial ceremony for the attacks.

September 17th – Occupy Wall Street protests started, this quickly spread globally.

September 24th – Imprisoned US hikers freed from Iran where they were held since 2009.

September 20th – “Don’t ask, don’t tell” ends, alowing gays to openly serve in the military.

October 3rd – Amanda Knox was acquitted and released from an Italian prison where she was wrongfully convicted of murder.

October 5th – Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Inc. passed away at age 56.

October 20th – Libya dictator Moammar Gadhafi was captured and killed by Libyan Forces.

October 21st – President Obama announces a full troop withdrawl from Iraq ending the Iraq war, which was one of the longest and divisive conflicts in US history.

October 23rd – Devastating earthquake hits Turkey

October 31st – World population hits seven billion (7,000,000,000)

November 4th – former Penn State football coach was indicted for sex crimes against minors, legendary coach Joe Paterno is fired 4 days later.

November 29th – Egypt holds its first free elections.

November 29th – Conrad Murray is sentenced to 4 years in prison for manslaughter of Michael Jackson.

December 17th – Kim Jong II, the dictator of North Korea dies of heart failure.

December 18th – The last soldiers pull out of Iraq.
